Anyone living in Comal County or any of the counties touching Comal

County may enter this contest.


ABSOLUTELY NO COMMERCIALLY PURCHASED FRUITS OR

VEGETABLES WILL BE ACCEPTED!


• Entries will be accepted between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., Wednesday, Sept.

25. Judging will take place on Wednesday, Sept. 25, beginning at 7:00

p.m.

• The screening committee and/or the Chairperson must accept all entries

and their decisions are final.

• One (1) exhibitor’s admission pass will be given for each entry

accepted.

• All entries must be picked up on Sunday, Sept.29 between 5:00

p.m. and 8:00 p.m. or Monday, Sept. 30, between 8:00 a.m. and

12:00 noon.

• All crops must be current year’s crop (October 2022 – September

2023). No branches of green pecans or green fruit will be accepted.

• No commercially grown or commercially purchased agriculture products

will be accepted!

• No product intended for resale or commercial use will be accepted as

an entry.

• No more than three (3) entries per person per category present at the

entry table will be accepted.

The chairperson's decision is final on all entries!



ADULT:

Grand Prize trophies and Reserve Grand Prize tri- color ribbons will be

awarded in seven (7) categories (as long as three or more entries in a category):

1) Field Crop

2) Orchard Crop

3) Garden Crop

4) Home Products

5/ Eggs

6) Meat Products

7) Fleece Product


FIELD CROPS

A) Corn – Best 6 ears: 6 white; 6 sure cropper; 6 yellow hybrid; 6 white hybrid;

6 other varieties; and/or one gallon shelled


B) Grain Sorghum – Best 6 heads: 6 common milo maize; 6 hybrid milo

maize; 6 hegira; 6 other varieties; and/or one gallon thrashed


C) Small Grain – One gallon (zip lock bag or jar) per entry: oats; wheat;

barley; spelt; and/or other varieties


D) Sorghum – Best 6 heads: red top; seeded ribbon cane; other varieties;

and/or one gallon thrashed


E) Forage Sorghum – Bale or bundle: best builder; sudan; and/or other

varieties


F) Flax – One gallon (zip lock bag or jar): All varieties


G) Legume Seed – One gallon: hubam clover; yellow sweet clover; and/or

other varieties


H) Field Peas – One gallon (zip lock bag or jar) per entry: black-eyed peas;

cream; cow; purple hulls; and/ or other varieties


I) Peanuts – One gallon or one complete bunch


J) Cotton – Complete stalk or 12 bolls


GARDEN CROPS

A) Vegetables – 6 each of large size vegetables only, 12 small size vegetables;

Examples: Large Vegetables - tomatoes, potatoes (irish and/or sweet), squash, onions, etc.

Small Vegetables - green beans, okra, banana peppers, hot peppers, etc..

Exceptions: Chili Paquin about 50-70 or roughly ½ cup

Bell peppers 6 or 12 depending on size; final decision made by

Chairperson


B) Watermelon: 1 black diamond; 1 tom watson; and/or 1 other varieties


C) Pumpkin: 1 kushaw and/or 1 other varieties


ORCHARD CROPS

(No green fruit will be accepted)


A) Fruits: 6 of each fruit - example: pears, peaches,oranges, persimmons, pomegranates, lemons, limes or any other fruit grown on trees.


B) Pecans – One quart shelled or one gallon unshelled (green pecans will not

be accepted): success; stewart; and/or other varieties


HOME PRODUCTS

A) Sweet Syrups

  1. Molasses- 1 quart
  2. Honey- 1 quart


B) Homemade Soap- 3 cakes


C) Dairy Products

1) Butter- 1 pound

2) Cheese- 1 pound: (a) cook cheese; (b) head cheese; (c) goat cheese;

(d) soft cheese; (e) hard cheese or any other homemade cheese


D) Eggs

1) 1 dozen Chicken eggs - (a) white; (b) dark brown; (c) greenish/blueish color

and any other color laid by a chicken

2) 1 dozen Quail eggs - any color

3) 1 dozen Duck eggs


MEAT PRODUCTS

A) Sausage- 1 link: (a) dried sausage; (b) salami; (c) pepperoni

B) Salt Cured Smoked Bacon- 1/2 pound

C) Smoked Ham- 1/4 pound

D) Jerky- Three (3) to Four (4) large pieces


FLEECE

A) Wool – 1 entire fleece

B) Mohair – 1 entire fleece

C) Miscellaneous – 1 entire fleece


KID GROW


The Youth Division for Agriculture. A category for young gardeners and environmentalists, age 18 years old and younger, and still enrolled in school, to display the garden crops, orchard crops, field crops, eggs, meat products, and home products they have grown in their backyard gardens with the help of their families.


Kid Grow is now divided into 4 separate age divisions:

  • 5 years and under
  • 6 to 10 years
  • 11 to 14 years
  • 15 to 18 years and still in high school


Kid Grow entries that include a ONE PAGE JOURNAL with photos of the child actively involved in the growing and/or creation of the entry will be considered for the overall trophy awarded for Best KID GROW Junior Division Agricultural Exhibit in each division.


Without the journal, Kid Grow participants may be considered for Reserve Grand Champion but not for Grand Champion.


Kid Grow Exhibits will be judged on:

1. color

2. freshness

3. uniformity of size

4. quality of product.

A tri-color ribbon for Best of Category, blue, red and white ribbons will be awarded to all winners in each age division in Kid Grow (garden crop, orchard crop, field crop, eggs, meat products, and home products ). Tri-color ribbon will only be awarded if three or more entries are entered in a category for Kid Grow.


Kid Grow RULES:

All produce must have been grown by the child in their backyard, farm or community garden. An adult may help in the process, but the child must have been actively involved in planting, watering, weeding and harvesting the vegetable(s), eggs, meat products, or home products.


Exhibit consists of an appropriate number as listed below of any chosen item. In case of questions, Committee Chairperson's decision is final.


• Garden Crop - example: vegetable, 1-3 large vegetables: 3 tomatoes, pumpkins, eggplant

6 small vegetables: 6 green beans, peppers, okra

• Orchard Crop – 3 of each fruit - example: 3 figs, 3 apples, 3 peaches, 3 pears, 3 lemons or limes, 1 pint shelled pecans

• Field Crop – example: 3 ears corn, Quart of grain (see list in adult category), 3 head sorghum (see adult categories)

• Eggs- 6 chicken eggs - (a) white; (b) dark brown; (c) greenish/blueish color and any other color laid by a chicken; 6 quail eggs, any color; 6 duck eggs

• Meat Product - Sausage- 1 link: (a) dried sausage; (b) salami; (c) pepperoni; Salt Cured Smoked Bacon- 1/4 pound; Smoked Ham- 1/4 pound; Jerky- One (1) to Two (2) large pieces

• Home Product - 2 cakes homemade soap, a 4 ounce tub of butter, 1 cup cheese, cooked, soft or hard, 1 pint honey, 1 pint molasses or any other sweet syrup.
